Big History in Small Places Across the Big Sky State

The Montana Historical Society promotes understanding and appreciation of Montana’s cultural heritage – past, present and future.

Chartered by the first Montana territorial legislature in 1865, the Montana Historical Society is one of the oldest institutions of its kind in the Trans-Mississippi West. Although it predates the State of Montana by a quarter century, the Society has functioned as a state supported institution since 1891. Over the past 150 years, the Society has gathered exceedingly rich collections and has gained national recognition for the quality of its publications, museum exhibits, and educational offerings. The Society has been accredited, and reaccredited, by the American Association of Museums continuously since 1973.
